Picture: Old man beside caged chickens

This is a picture by Vincenzo Pastore (portuguese), Italian photographer who disembarked in São Paulo on 1894, where he opened a successful studio and became one of the most active professional photographers on the state at the time. He later opened a branch of the studio in Bari, Italy. He documented much of São Paulo's habits of the time, such as street workers like merchants, bootblacks and newspaper carriers, as you can see in the collection where the image bellow can be found (photographs dated from 1910 to 1915). The economic development that soon followed changed much of the city appearance.

The collection is from Moreira Salles Institute.

Picture: Mount Pelée

This photograph appears to show a pyroclastic flow from Mount Pelée on 1902, taken by Angelo Heilprin. Mount Pelée is an active stratovolcano found at Martinique, a French island in the eastern Caribbean Sea. On that year, beginning on April 23, the volcano caused the worst volcanic disaster of the 20th century, provoking about 30,000 deaths mostly by pyroclastic flows on Saint-Pierre city, the largest at the time.

Pyroclastic flows are fast-moving current of hot gas and rock that moves away from the volcano at speeds up to 450 mph and temperatures of 1000 °C. You can see some footage of this on the video below.

Saint-Pierre, with thousands of habitats plus countryside people who were seeking refuge from the volcanic activities of the past days, was destroyed within minutes of the main eruption on May 8, 1902. Bellow you see a picture of Saint-Pierre as it was (unknown author) and after its destruction (photo by Angelo Heilprin). Photos by Angelo Heilprin (1 and 2) are on Public Domain and pic of intact Saint-Pierre has exceeded Copyright terms.

For Brazilian readers:

Picture: Hauling an 85-foot telescope

This is the NRAO's (National Radio Astronomy Observatory) telescope 85-2 being hauled by a bulldozer and tow tractor. Its engineering allowed for changing its position like this, varying the distance between movable telescopes and stationary ones, altering the resolution of the array's combined view. Original file at NRAO. The original description did not cite a date nor author, although the conceiving of the Green Bank Interferometer (GBI), which the 85-2 was part of, happened on the 60's. The GBI was NRAO's first array.

Arquivo original disponível no NRAO.
